SIBU: The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) has announced the appointment of Lucas Lau Sieu Sing as the president of MTPN Sarawak Region, effective Oct 10.

The appointment was made after considering his excellent leadership in leading the MTPN Sibu Branch, particularly in strengthening public awareness regarding consumer rights in the state.

Lau said, in a statement, that he expressed his appreciation to the MTPN Headquarters for the trust given, as well as to MTPN members throughout Sarawak for their continued commitment.

“With great gratitude and utmost thanks, I express my appreciation to the MTPN Headquarters for this very meaningful opportunity.

“I also extend my appreciation to all MTPN Sarawak members who are always dedicated to strengthening the eight basic consumer rights through various awareness campaigns and social activities,” he said.

Meanwhile, MTPN president, Datuk Paduka Dr Kevy Yeo described Lau’s appointment as a step in the right direction towards strengthening MTPN’s role in Sarawak, in addition to continuing efforts to effectively defend consumer interests.

He said that MTPN is confident that the new leadership will continue to be a pioneer in addressing various consumer complaint issues and fighting for justice for all levels of society.

While leading MTPN Sibu Branch, Lau and his team have successfully handled more than 50 cases of consumer complaints since August 2023, thus proving their efficiency and dedication in resolving consumer-related issues.

In fact, MTPN Sibu Branch is also actively carrying out awareness programmes through social media channels, local communities and media collaborations, to ensure that information regarding consumer rights is easily accessible to the public.

Among five key highlights that received attention in media reports related to MTPN’s activities are ‘The Importance of MTPN as a Community and Government Liaison’, ‘More than 50 Consumer Complaint Cases Handled Since August 2023’, ‘Direct Sales Victims Forced to Pay RM9,000’, ‘Housing Fraud Warning Involving RM1.8 Million Losses’ and ‘Hotspots for Online Fraud Cases Identified’.

MTPN has also made consumer education one of its main focuses, especially in empowering young people against the challenges of the digital world.

In line with this goal, Lau last May led the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MTPN and Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) to implement more awareness campaigns and social programmes aimed at consumer education.

His performance and continuous efforts in championing consumer issues, including tackling large-scale fraud and improving consumer literacy, have qualified him to be appointed as the Sarawak Consumer Rights Ambassador.

Lau also assured that he will continue to be committed working with all MTPN Sarawak members to ensure that every consumer in the state receives appropriate information and protection.
