KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two individuals over their alleged involvement in a bribery case worth about RM1 million.
A MACC source said the bribes were believed to have been solicited by an unemployed individual from the managing director of a sand supply company in return for not reporting the firm’s corrupt activities to the commission.
He said both male suspects, in their 50s, were arrested separately between 2 pm and 8 pm on Thursday at a restaurant in Penang and at the state MACC office.
“Preliminary investigations found that both suspects, namely an unemployed individual, who is also the main suspect, and a managing director of a sand supply company, are believed to have committed the offence in March.
“The main suspect was detained in a special operation conducted by the MACC Intelligence Division at a restaurant while receiving three cheques worth about RM1 million,” he said
The source said the main suspect was also believed to have issued threats to lodge a report with MACC if the payment was not made.
He said that during the arrest, MACC also seized several items, including the three cheques and four mobile phones.
Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations), Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said the case was being investigated under the MACC Act 2009. – BERNAMA
