SIBURAN: The MADANI Government has been urged to prioritise the upgrading of logistics and equipment for the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) to keep pace with the department’s growing responsibilities.
Puncak Borneo member of parliament, Datuk Willie Mongin, said such improvements are vital to ensure fire personnel are better equipped to handle modern challenges, especially as their scope of duties has expanded significantly over the years.
“The government must look into and address the welfare of our fire personnel by providing equipment that is more suitable and in line with current needs.
“This will not only make their tasks easier but also contribute to better outcomes in their operations,” he said.
Willie was speaking at the Gawai Dayak celebration organised by JBPM Zone 2 at the Siburan Fire and Rescue Station’s multipurpose hall last night.
He pointed out that the fire department’s scope now includes increasingly complex rescue operations and efforts to combat hazardous activities, all of which demand appropriate equipment and logistical support.

“I am not an expert on specialised equipment, but it is important that our fire personnel are equipped with tools that meet both national policies and international standards,” he said.
Willie also highlighted the unique challenges faced by fire and rescue services in Sarawak, noting that the state’s vast and often remote terrain necessitates more frequent maintenance of fire engines and equipment.
“For example, our fire personnel cover interior areas that are far and difficult to access.
“It takes longer for equipment to reach these locations, which means our machinery requires more regular maintenance,” he added.
On developments in his constituency, Willie shared that he is awaiting ministerial decision on a proposal to establish a new fire station in the Teng Bukap area to enhance emergency response in Puncak Borneo.
The event was also attended by Sarawak State Fire and Rescue Department Director, Jamri Masran.
