KUCHING: In support of the Sarawak Government’s Green Initiative, Sarawak Skills launched its first HVAC Service Technician Programme for the Refrigerant Management Sector, officially known as the Certificate of Service Technician Programme (CSTP).

Developed by the Department of Environment (DOE), the CSTP is designed to equip technicians with essential skills for the safe handling, storage and disposal of refrigerants, minimising environmental impact and safeguarding air quality.

Initially introduced in 2004 under the National CFC Phase-Out Management Plan (NCFCP), the programme was later enhanced through the Hydrochlorofluorocarbon Phase-Out Management Plan (HPMP), with a renewed focus on the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) sector.

A structured training module ensures participants meet environmental regulations while strengthening industry readiness in line with global sustainability goals.

Sarawak Skills’ Executive Director, who is also the Chairman of the Federation of Malaysian Skills Development Centres (FMSDC), Hallman Sabri, underlined the programme’s importance.

“Proper refrigerant recovery is crucial for environmental protection.

“This training supports DOE enforcement under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and reflects our broader commitment to sustainable technologies, including hydrogen energy, electric vehicles, and solar innovation,” he said.

The initiative underscores Sarawak Skills’ commitment to nurturing a skilled, environmentally conscious workforce that meets current and future industry demands.
