KUCHING: The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025 has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through a highly successful waste management initiative during its three-day run from June 20 to 22 at the iconic Sarawak Cultural Village.

This year’s edition of the internationally renowned festival generated a total of 3,543.3 kilogrammes (kg) of waste.

Out of this, 1,550.0 kg, or 31.3 per cent, was successfully diverted from landfills through effective recycling and composting strategies.

This builds on last year’s performance, where 4,581.72 kg of waste were recorded, with 1,712.7 kg (over 37 per cent) diverted.

Despite fluctuations in total waste generation, the festival has consistently maintained a diversion rate above 30 per cent, even as it welcomed over 22,000 attendees in 2025.

Recyclable and compostable materials this year included 215.7 kg of cardboard and paper, 410.8 kg of plastic, 271.0 kg of metal, 225.0 kg of glass, 21.9 kg of used cooking oil, and 413.6 kg of food waste.

The remaining 1,976.3 kg were classified as general waste.

Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor said the results were directly aligned with the Board’s broader vision.

“This outcome is directly in line with the Sarawak Tourism Board’s vision of making RWMF 2025 a truly sustainable and eco-friendly festival in the region,” she stated.

She also praised the heightened environmental awareness displayed by attendees.

“The festival’s success in maintaining a pristine environment over the three days wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from our attendees.

“Your commitment to properly disposing of waste in the designated bins was exemplary and greatly appreciated,” she added.

Acknowledging the contribution of key partners, she further expressed appreciation to Trienekens Sarawak.

“We extend our gratitude to Trienekens Sarawak for providing the crucial waste segregation bins, which were instrumental in diverting waste from landfills.

“It was a fantastic demonstration of community and collaboration for a greener festival,” she said.

Carrying the theme “Connections: One Earth, One Love,” RWMF 2025 not only showcased a diverse range of music and culture but also emphasised environmental responsibility.

This year’s successful waste management efforts underline the festival’s growing reputation as a leader in sustainable event organisation.

With this milestone, the Sarawak Tourism Board aims to continue setting a regional benchmark for green event practices, building on momentum from 2025 to ensure even greater environmental impact in the years ahead.
