SARIKEI: A series of high-impact projects have transformed Sarikei into one of the more progressive regions in Sarawak in terms of development and economy.

Sarikei MP Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said the Batang Rajang Bridge stands as a prime example of the state government’s commitment to develop rural areas.

He pointed out that the 1.4-km bridge, built at a cost of RM321 million, not only enhances connectivity along the Rajang River but also brings significant socio-economic benefits, particularly to residents of the Sarikei parliamentary constituency.

“This project is very meaningful to me personally, as it has been one of my main struggles since I was entrusted as the Sarikei MP.

“The Batang Rajang Bridge now stands as a symbol of the state government’s determination under the leadership of the Premier to bring Sarawak towards a more advanced, inclusive, and prosperous future,” he said.

Huang, who is also Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas for realising the long-awaited dream of the people in the area to enjoy basic infrastructure.

The Batang Rajang Bridge was officially opened on May 17 this year and has been named Jambatan Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang bin Tuanku Othman.

Moving forward, Huang said the government will continue to implement key development initiatives covering infrastructure, public amenities, and economic growth.

These include upgrading urban and rural road networks, improving village and longhouse roads, as well as building more efficient drainage systems to mitigate flood risks.

He also highlighted the upcoming Sarikei Waterfront Development Project, to be carried out in phases under the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA), which is expected to become a new tourism attraction and a vibrant community hub.

“All these projects are for the wellbeing of the people of Sarikei, as our Premier places great importance on rural development.

“He wants to reduce the development gap between urban and rural areas so that all Sarawakians can enjoy the state’s economic prosperity in line with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030,” he said.

Huang also urged Sarawakians to continue supporting the GPS government under the leadership of Abang Johari to ensure political stability and the smooth continuation of development efforts in the state, particularly in Sarikei.

“With the Premier’s far-sighted vision and holistic planning, I am confident Sarikei will transform from a remote district into one of the key economic centres in central Sarawak, contributing significantly to the state’s growth,” he added.

He called on the people to celebrate National Day with patriotism and unity.

“While we also celebrate Sarawak Day and Malaysia Day, National Day remains equally important as a platform to strengthen unity among our people, in line with the Malaysia Madani aspiration,” he said.
