MIRI: A major leakage involving a 1,100mm main water transmission pipeline at Mile 7, Jalan Miri-Bintulu has disrupted water supply to about 70 per cent of households and consumers in northern Miri, with repair works underway to restore services.
Sarawak Water confirmed the leakage following system testing and isolation works on the 750mm pipeline, which was found to be in good condition and unaffected by any leakage.
Repair works on the damaged 1,100mm pipeline began at 5pm on Wednesday (Jun 10) and are expected to cause a 24-hour water interruption, followed by a recovery period of approximately 12 hours.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the disruption affects areas stretching from Central Miri to Northern Miri.
“I urge residents to remain calm and vigilant as emergency response teams and contractors are on-site and working around the clock to complete the repairs as quickly and safely as possible,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
To minimise the impact on residents, Sarawak Water has activated 22 water collection centres and deployed water tankers and static tanks at selected locations to provide temporary clean water supply.
Consumers are advised to store sufficient water for essential use and use water prudently throughout the disruption and recovery period.
Meanwhile, motorists travelling between Miri and Bintulu are advised to use the Miri-Bintulu Coastal Road as an alternative route, as traffic management measures, including partial road closures, have been implemented near the repair site.
Residents requiring assistance may contact Sarawak Water’s 24-hour customer care line at 085-426626 or 085-436626, or the emergency mobile hotline at 010-6675633.
Ting also reminded the public to avoid spreading unverified information and fake news and to refer only to official updates issued through Sarawak Water’s communication channels.
