MUKAH: Choosing an institution of higher learning (IPT) after completing the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) is very important for furthering one’s education.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said students must consider their qualifications and abilities when making a decision.

“The decision needs to be made carefully and not be based on emotional aspects. If there are students who want to continue their studies outside Mukah, make sure it does not burden their parents.
“This is because, in Mukah alone, there are many IPTs such as Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak Branch Mukah Campus, Mukah Polytechnic (PMU), Sarawak Technical Excellence Centre (CENTEXS) Branch, and so on,” he said.

Royston said this when officiating at the Teachers’ Day, Workers’ Day and Gawai 2024 Student Integration Programme for Unity (RIMUP) celebration at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Three Rivers hall here yesterday.

He further explained that students from less well-to-do families could choose nearby or local IPTs that their families could afford.

He noted that no parent would reject their child’s desire to pursue education despite financial challenges as they would always strive to ensure their child’s success.

Touching on the event, Royston also expressed his appreciation to teachers for their dedication and knowledge imparted in educating children.

“Undoubtedly, the guidance provided over the years has made us who we are today,” he said.

In this regard, he said, RIMUP was a very good programme promoted by the Ministry of Education for students.

“It fits well with our situation in Sarawak, which consists of various races and different backgrounds.

“Some come from longhouses, villages, towns, with different religious beliefs but can still gather and sit under one roof.

“This is to ensure that harmony among each other is always maintained,” he added.

Additionally, he praised SMK Three Rivers for organising the event as it would provide valuable experiences and knowledge for the children to practise in fostering unity.

In conjunction with the event, he also handed over a grant of RM30,000 to the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of SMK Three Rivers and hoped that the existing cooperation would continue. Also present were SMK Three Rivers principal Donny Dahlan and SMK Three Rivers PTA president Mohd Nazir Besiri.
