MIRI: The Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) Miri will bring its ‘Jom Baca Bersama 10 Minit’ programme to Bakam from April 20 to 23, as part of efforts to promote reading among communities in northern Sarawak.
The four-day programme will be held from 9 am to 5 pm at the Bakam Multipurpose Hall and Bakam Community Digital Centre.
It is jointly organised with the N.72 Lambir Constituency Office, Miri District Office, Miri District Education Office and the Bakam Village Development Committee, under the theme “Reading is Fun, Reading Builds the Nation”.
A range of activities are planned for participants throughout the programme. These include the Reading Seeds Workshop, RDC @ Makerspace, a community interaction session with PANDei, as well as public speaking and rhythmic speech competitions.
There will also be a reading session with community leaders, alongside a service exhibition counter and lucky draw.
Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat said fostering a reading culture remains key to building a knowledgeable and critical-thinking society.
“Reading plays an important role in shaping individuals who contribute meaningfully to development,” he said, adding that such programmes help strengthen community values.
Sarawak State Library Miri regional manager Edison Ricket said the initiative is designed to encourage reading as a way of life, particularly among children and youth.
“It carries an important message, that reading should become part of the community’s way of life,” he said, noting that the programme also strengthens engagement between the library and local communities.
The highlight of the programme will be a 10-minute simultaneous reading session on April 23 at 9 am, to be officiated by Ripin, who is also the Lambir assemblyman.
Members of the public are invited to attend. More information is available via Sarawak State Library Miri’s official platforms.
