KUCHING: The Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has launched an investigation into a frightening mid-air incident involving one of its flights, MH2742, which suffered a sudden loss of cabin pressure en route from Kuala Lumpur to Bintulu on Monday (Oct 21).
According to The Star, MAG confirmed in a statement that the aircraft experienced a rapid drop in cabin pressure midway through the journey, prompting the crew to take immediate action.
“The operating crew then initiated a controlled descent and deployed oxygen masks as part of standard operating procedures,” the statement said.
The flight later landed safely at Bintulu Airport at 10.31 am without further incident.
“There were no safety concerns for passengers or crew at any time. Malaysia Airlines sincerely apologies for disrupting our passengers’ travel plans.
“The safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain our highest priority, and we are conducting a thorough review to understand the cause and to prevent recurrence,” MAG added.
Earlier, a Facebook user by the name of Abdul Jalil Bujang revealed a harrowing experience when the aircraft reportedly suffered a sudden loss of cabin pressure mid-flight.
The Facebook post, which has drawn wide attention, where Abdul Jalil shared the incident occurred about two hours into the flight, when passengers heard strong noices before oxygen masks dropped from the overhead compartments.
“Everything was fine until around 10 am, when I heard several unusual sounds. I turned to look at another passengers who appeared equally alarmed,” he said.
A while later, Abdul Jalil added the plane seemed to descend rapidly and the captain declared an emergency, instructing passengers to use oxygen masks.
“Although flight attendants always brief passengers on how to use safety equipment, most of us take it lightly. But during the emergency, it was chaotic.
“The oxygen mask near us got tangled and had to be shared among three passengers,” he added.
Abdul Jalil admitted that the experience made him fear the worst, prompting him to record a short video in case it became his final memory for his family.
“In my heart, I thought this might be our last flight together. I wanted to leave behind something for my children, grandchildren, and loved ones,” he said.
He recalled feeling completely helpless during the ordeal, with nothing he could do but breathe through the oxygen mask and pray for safety.
“There was no steering wheel, no brake, nothing I could control. I could only pray to Allah SWT for our safety,” he said.
Relief finally came when the captain announced that the plane was flying steadily at 10,000 feet.
Calm gradually returned as the crew resumed their duties and the captain informed passengers that they would land safely in Bintulu.
Upon landing, Abdul Jalil learned from a flight attendant that the plane had experienced a “pressure drop.”
He expressed gratitude for their safe arrival, writing, “Alhamdulillah, we landed safely,” despite the terrifying experience.
