PUTRAJAYA: Tourism Malaysia and Weixin Pay have formalised a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Collaboration, aimed at strengthening tourism promotion and improving digital travel experiences for Chinese visitors.

The collaboration highlights a shared commitment to leverage combined strengths, resources and expertise to position Malaysia as a preferred destination while supporting sustainable tourism growth and digital transformation.

“China remains one of Malaysia’s most important tourism source markets, with travellers increasingly expecting seamless digital integration from trip planning to payment solutions,” said Tourism Malaysia Director General, Mohd Amirul Rizal.

He added that the collaboration with Weixin Pay strengthens Malaysia’s engagement in the China market, enhances visitor confidence, and provides strong momentum for the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

“Weixin Pay is committed to strengthening its presence in Malaysia by working closely with local partners to deliver smooth cross-border payment experiences,” said Weixin Pay Managing Director for Southeast Asia and North America, Ben Yang.

He noted that the collaboration allows users to explore Malaysia’s attractions and culture through payment experiences that feel both exciting and reassuringly familiar during their travels.

Under the memorandum, both parties will implement joint digital marketing initiatives, technology adoption and integrated promotional efforts to boost Malaysia’s visibility and engagement in the China market.

The partnership also supports Malaysian merchants in utilising Weixin Pay’s digital tools, enabling more seamless, convenient and cashless payment experiences for Chinese visitors nationwide.

Weixin Pay has recorded rapid adoption across Malaysia’s transportation, dining and retail sectors, including key touchpoints such as KLIA Ekspres and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Collaboration between Weixin Pay and Payments Network Malaysia continues to deepen, enabling more Malaysian SMEs to accept Weixin Pay via DuitNow QR nationwide.

This allows Chinese visitors to make payments effortlessly using their preferred method, further improving convenience and confidence throughout their journey in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s tourism sector also maintained strong momentum, with international visitor arrivals reaching 38.3 million from January to November 2025, a 12 per cent increase.

China contributed 4.3 million arrivals, a 25.9 per cent year-on-year increase, reinforced by the mutual visa-free policy effective from July 2025.

The memorandum underscores a shared commitment to position Malaysia as a competitive, digitally enabled destination, strengthening bilateral tourism ties ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.
