KUALA LUMPUR: Laos has reaffirmed Malaysia as its closest and most valued partner as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, with both sides seeking to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, tourism and human resource development.
Lao Ambassador to Malaysia Thepthavone Sengmany (pic) said bilateral ties have been built on mutual trust, respect and strong support within Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
While political relations remain excellent, he said there is considerable potential to expand economic cooperation.
Malaysia is currently Laos’ fifthlargest foreign investor, behind China, Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea.
The ambassador said bilateral trade, valued at about US$50 million last year, provides a solid foundation for greater investment and commercial opportunities.
Tourism is another area where Laos hopes to learn from Malaysia’s experience.
The ambassador noted that Malaysia welcomed 42.2 million international visitors in 2025, exceeding its population of 34.3 million, while Laos attracted 4.6 million foreign tourists, surpassing its annual target.
Home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Laos aims to strengthen its tourism sector by drawing on Malaysia’s expertise.
Educational cooperation also remains a key pillar of bilateral ties.
Since the early 2000s, hundreds of Lao students have studied at Malaysian universities under government sponsorship programmes, with many now serving in senior positions in Laos’ public and private sectors.
Although Laos temporarily suspended scholarships during the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia remains a preferred destination for higher education.
More than 2,000 Lao officials have also benefited from the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme through training and capacity-building initiatives.
The ambassador said both countries are keen to expand collaboration in areas such as the digital economy, finance and advanced manufacturing.
Looking ahead, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane is scheduled to visit Malaysia next month, while the 4th Laos-Malaysia Joint Committee on Bilateral Cooperation meeting will be held later this year in Vientiane to further strengthen the longstanding partnership. – BERNAMA
