KUCHING: Malaysia’s presence on the world badminton stage has reached unprecedented heights as two national men’s doubles pairs and a women’s doubles team hit career-best rankings in the latest update released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were officially crowned World No. 1, while compatriots Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik followed closely behind at World No. 2 — marking the first time in history two Malaysian pairs have topped the global men’s doubles chart simultaneously.
In the women’s division, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah climbed to a career-high World No. 3 after a consistent run in international tournaments, including a runner-up finish at the Indonesia Open earlier this month – becoming the first pair to do so in 16-years since the likes of Chin Eei Hui–Wong Pei Tty.

The remarkable climb across both categories is credited to a combination of factors: year-round consistency, strategic tournament planning by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), player discipline, and rival nation pairings slipping in recent rankings due to injuries and early exits.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, expressed her pride in a Facebook post on Tuesday, writing:
“For the first time in history, Malaysia has a world number one & world number two men’s doubles pair.
“This is proof that our beloved sport is making steady strides and consistently performing at the highest level.
“Sze Fei-Izzuddin & Aaron-Wooi Yik have also given us a firm belief that Malaysia’s first Olympic gold is within touching distance,” said the minister, congratulating the history makers.
She also commended the national coaching staff and BAM for their long-term investment in talent development and mental resilience programmes.
