KUCHING: National women’s singles shuttler K. Letshanaa produced a masterclass upset at the Malaysia Masters 2026 in Unifi Arena today, after stunning world No. 9 Tomoka Miyazaki in straight sets to storm into the quarter-finals today.

Banking on valuable experience gained from recent battles against top-ranked opponents, Letshanaa delivered a composed and confident display to defeat the young Japanese ace 21-15, 21-17 in their Round of 16 clash.

The Malaysian controlled the pace well throughout the match, with Miyazaki struggling to settle into her rhythm after committing a string of unforced errors that allowed Letshanaa to maintain the upper hand.

Amidst the intensifying atmosphere, she also showed strong discipline in longer rallies and handled pressure moments calmly, particularly during the closing stages of both sets, as she denied Miyazaki any route back into the contest.

The victory marked another encouraging breakthrough for the national shuttler, who has continued to show progress against elite-level competition in recent months.

Meanwhile, it was the end of the road for fellow Malaysian Goh Jin Wei, who fell 13-21, 16-21 to India’s Aakarshi Kashyap in another women’s singles Round of 16 encounter.

Malaysia also saw mixed fortunes in the doubles events. Men’s doubles pair Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap advanced to the quarter-finals after overcoming compatriots Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing 21-12, 22-20.

However, another Malaysian pair, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, bowed out after losing 14-21, 18-21 to American duo Presley Smith and Zhi Yi Chen.
