BANGKOK: Malaysia overturned early pressure before pulling clear after the break to beat the Philippines 24-12 in the Women’s Rugby 7s competition at the SEA Games 2025 here.
The Philippines drew first blood with an early try, but Malaysia responded swiftly to keep the contest tight in the opening minutes, trailing 5-7 after the first exchanges.
Malaysia then found their rhythm in attack, edging ahead before the Philippines hit back, sending the Malaysians into halftime with a narrow 14-12 lead.
After the restart, Malaysia tightened their defence and began to assert control, limiting the Philippines’ attacking opportunities.
Nur Alyia Nabila Samsubahari crossed for Malaysia’s first try of the second half, extending the lead and shifting momentum firmly in their favour.
Malaysia continued to press, with Noor Azzuwa Azhar adding another try to stretch the advantage and put the result beyond doubt.
The win strengthened Malaysia’s position in the tournament as they maintained their push in the Women’s Rugby 7s event at the SEA Games 2025.
Earlier, Malaysia opened their campaign with a narrow 21-19 victory over Singapore in a tense and hard-fought encounter.
Malaysia is set to play Indonesia on Sunday at 2.25 pm (Malaysia time).
