KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated Malaysia’s firm stance on the need to restore peace in the Middle East, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel.

Speaking on the current conflict, Anwar stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved unless Israel is pressured to cease its provocative and violent actions against other nations.

He said Iran’s retaliation was expected given the attacks and killings that have continued, especially in Gaza, where women and children remain among the victims.

“When you attack and kill people, of course there will be a response. We are taking a rather fair stance,” Anwar said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending a meeting with Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.

He warned that foreign intervention, especially from the United States, could further escalate the conflict.

Anwar also voiced concern over the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz – a key maritime route – which could have serious repercussions for the global economy.

“But to me, what matters most is human lives and justice,” he added.

While urging for a halt to all violence, Anwar questioned the international community’s selective approach.

“Yes, we call for Iran to not retaliate. But why is Israel allowed to act in such a manner?” he asked.

Anwar said Malaysia must continue to speak out for human rights and justice, asserting that sovereign nations should not be silenced on such critical matters.

“Hopefully, there will be change. But all we can do is pray – for the good and well-being of the people,” he said.
