PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia welcomes Australia’s stance in calling for an end to hostilities in Gaza and supporting humanitarian assistance, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim describing it as an important step towards a lasting resolution.

“I appreciate Australia’s stance on Gaza, calling for an end to hostilities, supporting humanitarian assistance, and working towards a lasting resolution. That position matters, and Malaysia welcomes that,” he said at a joint press conference with his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, here today.

At the same time, Anwar said Malaysia will remain steadfast in its support for a sovereign Palestinian state despite ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank.

He said the ceasefire in Gaza has yet to translate into meaningful relief for civilians, noting that violence and suffering persist even as diplomatic efforts continue.

“The world must not avert its gaze and allow a ceasefire to become the silence of the grave. What the Palestinian people need is a just and lasting solution, and that means a viable sovereign state. Malaysia will not waver on this matter of principle and conscience,” he said.

Anwar stressed that Malaysia’s stance on Palestine is anchored in principle and conscience, underscoring the need for a just and durable political solution that guarantees the rights and security of the Palestinian people.

He also expressed appreciation to Albanese for undertaking the visit to Kuala Lumpur and emphasised the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation between the two countries amid evolving global challenges.

Malaysia and Australia, he said, would continue to strengthen bilateral engagement ahead of the upcoming Fourth Annual Leaders’ Meeting scheduled to be held in Australia. – BERNAMA
