KUCHING: Malaysian companies explored opportunities to introduce innovative specialty food products to the growing market in the United States (US) for health-conscious diets and gluten-free alternatives.

Among these was an initiative from IANA Corporation Sdn Bhd, in partnership with Craun Research Sdn Bhd, to explore the potential of sago gluten-free cookies in North America.

Craun Research Sdn Bhd is a Sarawak-based government-linked entity championing the local sago industry.

They examined the possibility at a US Market Immersion Programme, participated by seven Malaysian firms, including key players in the food and retail sectors.

The initiative was organised by ENESCorp International LLC in collaboration with SME Corp Malaysia.

The programme was designed to equip businesses with the knowledge and networks necessary to navigate the complexities of the US market, offering insights into market entry strategies, distribution channels and evolving consumer trends.

As part of the programme, participants engaged with influential industry bodies, including The Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, MATRADE New York, the Malaysian Agricultural Counsellor’s Office in Washington DC, and The Specialty Food Association.

These interactions provided Malaysian firms with first-hand exposure to the intricacies of the American retail and food distribution landscape.

A notable highlight was a session titled ‘Current Trends and the Future of Specialty Foods’, where experts from The Specialty Food Association shed light on emerging consumer preferences.

The programme also included warehouse visits and market explorations in Pennsylvania and New York, enabling participants to observe retail operations and distribution strategies in real time.

These experiences provided invaluable insights for Malaysian businesses aiming to establish a presence in the US.
