MIRI: The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Branch, alongside its Community Care & Protection Unit and the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), recently paid a visit to two underprivileged families in Tudan Desaras.

The initiative, spearheaded by Dr Uma Devi, chairperson of the Community Care and Protection Sub-Committee, served to not only lend support but also educate the local families on crucial health and environmental issues.

Attendees were engaged in an informative session highlighting the dangers of plastic consumption, the importance of cleanliness, and the value of healthy food choices.

“The dangers of plastics cannot be overstated,” Dr Uma stated, stressing the urgent need for awareness regarding the harmful effects of plastic use.

Stressing the importance of hygiene, she encouraged the families to adopt better practices for overall health.

Furthermore, the session underscored the significance of nutritious eating, aiming to instil healthier habits within the community.

Adding to the informative nature of the visit, representatives from the Miri City Council, including Roslan, Mohd Shobri, and Dayang Mariamah, were present to share insights into local services and the avenues available for reporting issues to the council.

In a show of commitment to environmental sustainability, the council presented each family with a “Say No to Plastic” sticker, serving as a constant reminder to avoid single-use plastics and to embrace eco-friendly alternatives.

In a proactive move against plastic waste, the MRC Miri Branch distributed stainless steel food containers, generously donated by anonymous benefactors.

The organisation extended heartfelt thanks to these donors, acknowledging their vital role in the initiative.

In addition to educational resources, the dedicated volunteers ensured that the families received dry food supplies, clothing, and essential hygiene products.

This visit marks just one of many that the MRC Miri branch has planned to uplift the local community in the face of adversity.

The branch encourages further involvement from volunteers and donors who are keen to partake in this significant cause.
