KUCHING: Malaysia faces a daunting challenge to reach the quarter-finals of the Asia Mixed Team Championships following a 2-3 defeat to Hong Kong in their opening Group B match on Feb 12.

The mixed doubles pairing of Hoo Pang Ron and Cheng Su Yin, selected ahead of the more experienced Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie, had hoped to provide a solid foundation for the team.

Despite their valiant effort, the Malaysian pair succumbed 21-17, 17-21, 11-21 to Tang Chun Man and Ng Tsz Yau in a 59-minute contest at the Qingdao Conson Sports Centre in China.

However, K. Letshanaa restored parity for Malaysia in the women’s singles, defeating Saloni Samirbhai 21-18, 21-18 in a composed performance.

World no. 53 Justin Hoh then gave World no. 21 Lee Cheuk Yiu a real scare in the opening game, before ultimately falling 19-21, 16-21 in the men’s singles.

The women’s doubles pairing of Teoh Mei Xing and Go Pei Kee, ranked No. 48 in the world, were tasked with defeating the higher-ranked Hong Kong duo of Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam to keep Malaysia’s hopes alive.

However, they were unable to overcome the challenge, losing 17-21, 14-21.

With the tie already decided in Hong Kong’s favour, the India Open men’s doubles champion Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun salvaged a consolation point for Malaysia, winning 21-13, 21-11 against Hung Kuei Chun and Lui Chun Wai.

Malaysia now faces an all-important match against Indonesia on Feb 13, in a bid to stay in contention for a place in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile earlier for Group D, India swept Macau with a 5-0 clean victory.
