KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has called on all strata of society, including politicians, individuals and associations, to foster unity and avoid actions that could incite racial or religious discord.

Commenting on the recent controversy involving three Era FM radio hosts who were suspended following a video allegedly mocking Hindu religious practices, Fadillah stressed the importance of mutual respect in Malaysia’s multiracial society.

“We must find ways to strengthen unity among our communities.

“The foundation of our nation’s strength lies in respecting each other’s beliefs and cultures.

“If we fail to uphold this, misunderstandings can escalate into racial conflicts,” he told the media.

He was attending the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Friendly Neighbourhood’s ‘bubur pedas’ distribution programme at Satok Sports Complex here today.

Fadillah, who is the Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, also urged Malaysians to refrain from engaging in what could be deemed insensitive, especially related to religious or cultural practices.

He also highlighted the high level of racial and religious tolerance in Sarawak and Sabah, stressing that such harmony must be preserved to ensure the country’s continued peace and stability.

The controversy arose after a video surfaced, showing one of the radio hosts performing a dance while chanting “vel vel”, a phrase associated with Hindu rituals during Thaipusam.

The footage sparked outrage, particularly within the Indian community, leading to multiple police reports and an official investigation.

Fadillah reiterated that the matter should be left to the authorities for further investigation but stressed that unity and mutual respect must remain at the core of the nation’s values.
