MUKAH: Police have arrested a 48-year-old man for discharging a homemade shotgun at a farm in Nanga Pelugau, Ulu Balingian, following a dispute over a missing water pump yesterday.

The police arrest the suspect at his farmhouse.

The arrest was carried out by a team from the Mukah’s Criminal Investigation Division at a farmhouse in the area.

Mukah District Police chief, DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias, said the arrest was made around 10:30 pm on the same day after police received a report from a 36-year-old man at 9:55 am, claiming that his relative had fired a shot using a homemade firearm.

“The motive behind the shooting was reportedly to serve as a warning due to a misunderstanding over the loss of a water pump,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the homemade shotgun, locally known as ‘bakakuk’, hidden in an oil palm plantation nearby, was also seized.

“The suspect, a farmer, has been remanded for two days until July 29 to assist with investigations,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for unlawful possession of firearms, and Section 39 of the same Act for discharging a firearm.
