MIRI: A 60-year-old man has been detained by the Marine Police Force during ‘Op Taring Landai’ yesterday (Feb 8), following the discovery of contraband cigarettes valued at RM246,400.
Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was apprehended at approximately 10.30 am during an operation at Jalan Melayu Centre Point.
Upon inspecting the suspect’s pick-up truck, officers discovered a supply of Win Mild cigarettes.
When questioned, the suspect was unable to provide valid documentation from the customs authorities.
The cigarettes were found to have been stored without payment of customs duties, constituting an offence under the Customs Act 1967.
The vehicle itself, valued at RM138,000, was also seized, bringing the total value of the confiscated goods to RM384,400.
All seized items, along with the suspect,were handed over to the Miri District Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department (CID IPD) for further investigation and legal proceedings.
