SIBU: The General Operations Force (GOF) arrested a local man and seized over RM1.4 million worth of untaxed cigarettes and beers last month.
Sarawak GOF Brigade commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said the operation, codenamed ‘Op Taring Alpha’, was carried out by the GOF 10th Battalion’s Intelligence Branch at around 1.45 pm on Jul 21.
The team raided a house a house believed to be used for storing contraband that had not passed customs duties
“During the raid, a 43-year-old man was taken into custody for further action.
“Further inspection led to the discovery of 783,040 sticks of illicit cigarettes and 225.12 litres of beers, all of which are various brands, inside the premises.
“The contraband and a vehicle were seized in this operation,” he said.
Che Ghazali added that the estimated value of the seized items was RM1,405,368.16, based on market price.
Following this, both the suspect and seized items were handed over to the Sibu district police headquarters for further actions.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
