KUCHING: A man who allegedly robbed a 24-hour convenience store along Jalan Pending at knifepoint has been arrested less than 24 hours after the incident.
Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the robbery occurred around 7.11 pm on Wednesday (Apr 9), when a 20-year-old cashier was on duty at the store.
“She was approached by a man wielding a sharp weapon, who threatened her and took RM500 from the cash register before fleeing,” he said in a statement today (Apr 12).
Following swift police action, a team from Bintawa police station tracked down and arrested a 41-year-old local man at around 11 pm the next day in the Bintawa area.
Also seized during the arrest were a helmet, a cutter knife, and the clothing believed to have been worn during the robbery.
“Initial interrogation revealed the suspect admitted to the crime. A drug test also came back positive,” Merbin said.
The suspect has been remanded for five days until April 16 as investigations continue to determine if he is linked to other cases.
The case is being investigated under Sections 392/397 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years, along with possible whipping or a fine.
