KUCHING: A local man claimed trial to attempted murder and obstructing civil servants, following an incident on Mar 29 in which police opened fire at a four-wheel-drive vehicle (4WD) that allegedly tried to ram into two officers along Jalan Green.
Mark Lionel Micheal, 41, who was driving the vehicle during the incident, pleaded not guilty before two separate Magistrates to three charges.
For the first and second charges, he was accused of attempting to murder two policemen by trying to run them over with his vehicle while attempting to evade a police roadblock. The charges were framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan set bail at RM3,000 with one local surety and fixed May 26 for re-mention.
On the third charge, Mark, together with two other individuals, was accused of obstructing police officers from carrying out their duties. The charge was framed under Section 186 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan allowed bail at RM2,000 with one local surety and scheduled the case for further mention on May 27.
The offences took place around 3.20 am at a bus terminal along Jalan Green on Mar 29.
Initial urine tests revealed that all three individuals tested positive for drugs. One of the co-accused, Rogers Diana, was found to have two prior records for drug abuse and possession, while Mark also had two previous drug-related offences.
Insp Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while Mark was represented by counsel Andrew Winston Kaya.
