BAU: Police here have arrested a 32-year-old man suspected of drug possession and abuse during an operation conducted in Kampung Opar today (15 March) afternoon.

The suspect was detained by officers from the Bau District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division during an operation carried out between about 1 pm and 3.30 pm.

According to Bau District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Haide A. Rahman, the man was found in possession of a small transparent plastic packet containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu, a synthetic stimulant commonly linked to methamphetamine abuse.

He said the suspect was arrested under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which covers the possession of illegal drugs.

“Preliminary urine screening conducted on the suspect returned positive for drugs,” Mohd Haide said in a statement.

Following the result, the man was further detained under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which relates to the use of prohibited substances.
Police did not disclose the quantity of the substance seized but said the investigation is continuing.

The arrest forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts by the police narcotics division to curb drug-related offences in the district.

Mohd Haide warned that the police would take firm action against anyone found involved in drug activities.

He also urged members of the public to assist law enforcement agencies by sharing information on suspected drug offences.

Information can be channelled to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) Bukit Aman hotline at 012-208 7222 or the Sarawak Police Contingent JSJN hotline at 017-592 9211.

Authorities say public cooperation remains a key element in efforts to tackle drug abuse and trafficking in communities across Sarawak.
