SIBU: A local man in his 50s lost RM140,880 after falling victim to an online part-time job scam that promised high commissions.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said they received a report on Wednesday (March 5) from the victim, who works as a shop assistant, and have opened an investigation paper under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
The scam began on Dec 22, 2024, when the victim came across a job offer on Facebook and contacted a woman named “Wang Yee Yao” via Messenger.
The suspect claimed the job involved selling handbags, clothes, and shoes on TikTok, with a 30 per cent commission.
Attracted by the offer, the victim clicked a link to begin and was instructed to make upfront payments to bank accounts provided by the suspect.
Between Dec 22, 2024, and Feb 24, 2025, the victim transferred money 23 times to 17 different local bank accounts, totaling RM140,880.
On Feb 25, the victim contacted the suspect to request his money and commission. However, the suspect claimed his account was frozen and demanded another RM3,000 to release the funds.
Realising he had been scammed, the victim lodged a police report.
Police urged the public to be cautious of job offers on social media that promise lucrative returns and to verify companies or agencies before making payments.
