KUCHING: A local man has claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to a charge of possessing a knife without a lawful purpose at Kuching International Airport last Friday (Apr 25).
Sazri Sarkawi, 25, pleaded not guilty before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi after the charge was read out under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
The offence provides for imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years and caning, upon conviction
He was accused of possessing a sharp weapon, specifically a knife, at the airport’s parking area at 11.50 am without any reasonable excuse.
During the proceedings, Sazri appealed for bail, citing his responsibility to support his pregnant wife and a child.
However, deputy public prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian objected to bail as the offence is non-bailable and there is a risk the accused could abscond.
The court later denied bail and ordered the accused to be remanded until the case is resolved, with the next mention date fixed for May 27.
It was understood the accused is also suspected of being involved in drug-related activities during the incident.
Sazri was unrepresented.
