Man faces jail, caning over meth possession

KUCHING: A local man may be facing jail time and caning after police allegedly found him in possession of methamphetamine worth RM627 in Kampung Semariang Lama last Tuesday (Jan 27).

The 37-year-old was arrested by Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) at around 12.20 pm, following intelligence-led surveillance.

A search at a house in the village led to the discovery of two plastic packets containing suspected methamphetamine weighing a total of 5.70 grammes.

Initial urine screening test showed the man, who has one prior record, tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

He has been remanded for two days until Jan 30 to assist investigations under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Upon conviction, the suspect may face imprisonment for a term of up to five years and up to nine strokes of the cane.
