CYBERJAYA: A 41-year-old man was fined RM30,000 by the Keningau Sessions Court after pleading guilty to posting offensive content that insulted the judiciary on Facebook.
Mohamad Azri Sahlam was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) for knowingly using a network service to initiate the transmission of communication which was obscene and offensive in nature on Dec 22, 2025.
The accused paid the fine following the sentencing.
Under Section 233(2) of the same Act, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
In a statement on Tuesday (Apr 28), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) reiterated its firm stance against the dissemination of offensive content involving the ‘3Rs’ (Race, Religion and Royalty).
The commission said such actions not only undermine the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary but also pose a significant threat to public order and social harmony.
“The public is reminded to use social media prudently and responsibly to ensure that the cyberspace remains safe and free from any form of misuse that could trigger public unrest or tension,” the statement said.
MCMC further warned that stern action will be taken against those found involved in similar offences.
