Man fined RM2,500 for purchasing illegal lottery tickets

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM2,500 in default three months in prison for purchasing unlicensed lottery tickets on Dec 2.

Sebri, 34, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan to the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term up to six months or both, upon conviction.

He is alleged to have committed the offence at a 24-hour convenience store on Jalan Canna, here at around 1.35 pm on the date of the incident.

According to the case facts, a police team raided the premises and arrested Sebri for alleged involvement in purchasing illegal lottery tickets.

During the raid, police also seized a phone believed to be used for gambling activities, two pieces of paper containing unlicensed public lottery numbers and cash totalling RM50.

Investigations confirmed that the phone and cash were used in the purchase of unlicensed lottery tickets.

ASP Arman Ibrahim prosecuted the case, while Sebri was unrepresented by counsel.
