Man fined RM2,500 for threatening girlfriend with knife

KUCHING: A man was arrested for pointing a knife at his girlfriend and stealing her smartphone, including RM150 in cash.

The action landed James Ting Wei Liong, 21, in trouble as he was fined RM2,500 in default four months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today.

Ting, who works as a shop assistant, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

He was accused of stealing a Redmi brand smartphone and RM150 in cash belonging to the 19-year-old victim.

He committed the offence in front of a leading supermarket in Jalan Hui Sing, at around 12.30 pm on May 2.

The court was told that the accused had gone to the complainant’s place of work at the supermarket and expressed his dissatisfaction with the complainant’s sister and father and wished to meet them.

During the incident, the accused also pointed a folding knife and seized the complainant’s bag containing cash and a smartphone.

Worried about her safety, the complainant lodged a police report which led to the arrest of the accused on May 3 at a rented room in King Centre.

Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
