Man fined RM2,600 for possessing marijuana by roadside

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM2,600, in default six months imprisonment, for possessing 0.284 grams (g) of marijuana in December last year.

Muhammad Alif Safri Halmi, 35, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to the charge under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

It carries a fine up to RM20,000 or imprisonment of up to five years or both, upon conviction.

He was found in possession of the prohibited substance by the roadside along Jalan Muara Tabuan, at around 3am on December 11, 2024.

Based on the case facts, on the day of the incident, a police patrol team came across a Perodua Kancil parked in a suspicious manner and conducted an inspection on it.

Further checks led to the discovery of a cigarette box containing a plastic packet with dried leaves, suspected to be marijuana weighing approximately 0.64g.

Alif was arrested and taken to the police station along with the seized item for further investigation.

The case item was sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis, and lab results confirmed the substance as marijuana with an actual weight of 0.284g.
