Man fined RM3,000 for operating illegal entertainment outlet

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a tenant RM3,000 in default one month in prison for operating an unlicensed entertainment outlet at his rented premises in February.

Kiang Loong, 51, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge under Section 5(1)(b) of the Entertainment Ordinance 2000, punishable under Section 5(3) of the same ordinance.

Upon conviction, the offence carries a maximum fine of RM20,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

He was found operating the outlet without a valid licence at the premises in Batu Kawa here at around 12:15 am on February 16.

According to the case facts, a team from Kuching Criminal Investigation Division raided the premises following suspicion that it was being used as an entertainment outlet without local authority approval.

During the operation, police arrested a local man, who admitted to running the entertainment outlet without a valid licence.

Among the items seized were a television, a remote control, a speaker and a business receipt.

Further investigations with the local council confirmed that Kiang did not possess a licence to operate such activities.
