KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here sentenced a labourer to 11 months in prison for abusing syabu drugs in May this year.
Abdul Azim Allias, 38, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan to a charge framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15 of the same Act for consuming methamphetamine and amphetamine.
Upon conviction, the offence carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a maximum two years’ imprisonment.
Magistrate Ling also ordered Abdul to be placed under police supervision for three years upon completing his sentence.
He was found positive for the drugs after being detained at the Kuching Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) at around 12.15pm on May 27.
According to the facts of the case, police had detained the accused on suspicion of drug abuse.
An initial urine screening tested positive, and subsequent analysis by the Sarawak General Hospital’s Pathology Department confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system.
Investigations later concluded that Abdul had been involved in the abuse of dangerous drugs.
