Man gets 12 months in prison for assaulting wife

KUCHING: A 56-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here after he pleaded guilty to causing hurt to his wife in a case read together with an earlier drug offence for which he was fined RM3,000.

Nen Sani was handed the jail term by Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nadzwa Radzali after admitting to voluntarily causing hurt to his wife under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same Code.

The charge stated that on Feb 14 at about 11am, at a rented house in Kampung Muhibbah here, he slapped his wife and kicked her.

According to the facts of the case, the incident occurred in the living room while the victim was washing dishes in the kitchen. The accused became angry after she did not respond when he called out to her.

As a result of the assault, the woman suffered bruising on her forehead, right thigh and left ribs.

A medical report confirmed fractures to her left seventh and eighth ribs, multiple bruises around the right eye and blisters on her upper and lower limbs.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly prosecuted the case. The accused was unrepresented.

In a separate proceeding, Nen was fined RM3,000, in default 10 months’ imprisonment, by Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan after he pleaded guilty to self-administering dangerous drugs.

He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for administering to himself amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department office here on Jan 26, 2024.

The court also ordered that he be placed under police supervision for two years upon completion of his sentence in accordance with Section 38B of the same Act.

The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulufti Suriani.

Court records showed that Nen has previous criminal records, including theft and a prior drug-related offence. He was unrepresented in both cases.
