Man gets 12 years for causing friend’s death

SRI AMAN: A man was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here on Monday (Mar 16) for causing the death of his friend during a fight last August.

Magistrate Intan Nurul Fareena Zainal Abidin handed down the sentence to Mohamad Adywira Putra Abdullah, 20, who was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The section provides for a prison sentence of up to 30 years and a possible fine upon conviction.

Sri Aman police chief Supt Dennis Bunyam said the victim, identified as Henry Ria, and Mohamad Adywira, who were friends, were believed to have been drinking alcohol before an argument broke out.

“The fight continued outside the house, where the accused picked up a wooden stick and struck the victim, causing serious injuries to the head.

“The victim was later taken to hospital and treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but was pronounced dead on Aug 23, 2025 due to the injuries sustained,” he said in a statement.

Dennis added that the court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 12 years in prison, with the sentence to run from the date of his arrest on Aug 6, 2025.
