KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today (Apr 28) for drug use.
Kelvin Vong, 25, pleaded guilty to the charge read before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nadzwa Radzali.
He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under the same provision for consuming amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The offence was committed while he was in custody at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) office at Padawan district police headquarters (IPD), at about 12.20 pm on Aug 12, 2025.
The offence carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, along with mandatory supervision for up to three years upon conviction.
Facts of the case showed that an initial urine screening conducted while he was detained returned positive for drugs.
The urine sample was later sent to the Sarawak General Hospital’s pathology department, where tests confirmed the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, while the accused was unrepresented.
