Man gets 8 years, two strokes for robbery

KUCHING: A man was sentenced to eight years’ jail and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for robbing a cafe in Kota Sentosa last Monday (Jan 19).

Nur Muhamaad Zaitul Ikhmal Reki, 28, a father of two from Samariang, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery.

He had taken RM2,500 in cash from the cafe.

According to court facts, the female cashier on duty was approached by a man wearing a black shirt pretending to buy a drink.

After paying, the accused allegedly went to the counter, opened the cash drawer, and took the money.

The complainant tried to intervene, but the man threatened to harm her before leaving the cafe in a Perodua Kancil.

A police report was lodged, and the accused was arrested later the same day during Ops Lejang at a leading supermarket in Malihah at around 8.15 pm.

Police also seized the Perodua Kancil, which bore a fake flat-number registration.

CCTV footage from the cafe confirmed the robbery and the amount stolen.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng handled the prosecution, while Nur Muhamaad appeared in court unrepresented.
