SIBU: A 57-year-old man was on Tuesday (Nov 18) sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here for robbing a goldsmith shop of a gold chain worth over RM20,000.
Wong Siew Too from Jalan Merdeka here pleaded guilty to the charge read and explained to him through an interpreter, and he understood the consequences of maintaining his plea of guilt.
The charge against him stated that he had committed the act at a goldsmith shop along Market Street on Nov 5 at about 1.50pm.
The offence falls under Section 390(2) of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 392, which provides for an imprisonment of up to 14 years as well as liable to fine or whipping.
Based on facts of the case, the accused entered the shop to look at gold items on display.
He was then attended by a shop assistant, who took out a gold chain for him to view.
Suddenly, the man ran off with the item. The shop manager (complainant), who was present, gave chase and managed to apprehend him before contacting the police for assistance.
Police investigation revealed that the accused first came to the shop at about 9.45am on Nov 5 to look at several gold chains, and then returned later at around 1.40pm to view them again. The accused’s robbery act was caught on CCTV.
The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam before Judge Musyiri Peet, while the accused, who has no legal representation, was ordered to serve the sentence with effect from the date of his arrest.
