Man gets two-year prison term and caning for drugs

KUCHING: A man was sentenced to two years in prison, three strokes of the cane, and fined RM3,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here.

He pleaded guilty to charges of possessing 9.09g of methamphetamine and involvement in drug abuse activities.

Afis, 30, appeared before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi on Friday (July 14), where he admitted to the charges read to him with the assistance of an interpreter.

The first charge accused him under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries punishment under Section 12(3) of the same act for possessing 9.09g of methamphetamine.

He was found in possession of the prohibited substance in an unnumbered house in Desa Wira, Padawan, on July 5, 2021, at around 5.20pm.

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years. For this offence, Magistrate Zubaidah imposed a two-year prison sentence and three strokes of the cane on the accused.

In the second charge, Mohd Afis was accused of involvement in the abuse of amphetamine and methamphetamine.

He tested positive for drugs when detained at the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division Office of the Padawan District Police Headquarters on July 5, 2021, at around 7.15pm.

This charge falls under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and carries punishment under Section 15(1) of the same Act. The court imposed a fine of RM3,000 or three months’ imprisonment for this offence.

Furthermore, the court ordered that the accused be placed under police supervision for two years after serving the sentence.
