LAWAS: A local man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting his niece, who had been staying at the suspect’s house during the recent weekend school holidays.

Lawas police chief DSP Liong Tindan confirmed that the arrest was made following a report lodged by the victim, a secondary school student, at 3.17 pm on Sunday (Oct 26).

Acting on the report, a police team raided the 42-year-old suspect’s house along Jalan Lawas Damit and apprehended him shortly after.

“During the search, officers discovered and seized one shotgun along with three cartridges.

“Further checks found the suspect did not possess a valid firearm licence, and has three prior records related to drug offences,” he said.

Both the suspect and seized weapon was taken to the police station for further actions.

The case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960.

In a separate operation, police arrested a 34-year-old local man at 9.50 pm the same day for alleged involvement in drug abuse.

“Inspections on his house, car, and motorcycle did not find any illegal items. However, his urine test returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

“Background checks found that the second suspect had no prior record,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
