KUCHING: A 33-year-old man was arrested in Stutong Baru here on Friday (Mar 20) after police seized 13.68 grammes of suspected methamphetamine valued at RM1,504.80.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect was detained at about 9.45pm by a team from the district Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division following intelligence-led operations in the area.
He said an initial urine screening on the suspect returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“Checks also revealed that the suspect has two prior criminal records,” he said in a statement.
Alexson added that the case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a jail term of not less than two years and not more than five years, along with between three and nine strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
“The suspect has been remanded for four days from Mar 22 to 25 to assist in investigations,” he stated.
Alexson said the success of the operation was the result of continuous intelligence efforts and cooperation from the public, stressing that police will not compromise with any parties involved in drug-related activities.
He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) in combating drug abuse to protect both present and future generations.
