SIBU: A local man has been arrested for allegedly keeping various protected wildlife species without valid permits at his residence here on Monday (May 19).
The 49-year-old suspect was detained around 9.30 am during a raid by the Intelligence Branch of the 10th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF), following a tip-off.
Sarawak GOF Brigade deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said the team discovered 35 live animals of different protected species, 84kg of coral stones, and eight animal cages at the premises.
“The estimated value of the seizure is RM34,730 based on current market prices,” he said in a statement today.
All items, along with the suspect, were handed over to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Sibu Division for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 29(2) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998.
