MIRI: A man was arrested after allegedly stealing electrical cables here.
Police say the theft disrupted power supply and posed a significant risk to public safety.
The suspect, a local man believed to be in his 30s, was detained on Mar 23 in Marina area, following a tip-off from members of the public.
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Division carried out the operation with support from auxiliary police of Sarawak Energy Berhad.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the man was arrested at the scene, where officers also recovered tools believed to have been used to cut industrial cables.
Investigators seized stripped cable casings and several coils of cable suspected to be linked to the theft.
Police believe the suspect was actively engaged in dismantling electrical infrastructure at the time of the arrest.
“This type of offence has wider consequences beyond financial loss,” ACP Mohd Farhan said.
“It can interrupt essential services and create serious safety hazards for the public.”
Authorities are now examining whether the suspect has links to a broader network involved in the collection and resale of stolen materials.
Police also issued a warning to scrap dealers and intermediaries, stressing that handling stolen materials is a criminal offence and will be pursued without compromise.
Further investigations are ongoing.
