BETONG: A viral Facebook comment has landed a local man in police custody after authorities stepped in to address content that was said to be capable of threatening public harmony.
The 46-year-old was arrested at Jalan Laichee in Sibu to assist with investigation linked to a Facebook account operating under the name ‘Ucu Lana Nangga Melaun’, which allegedly posted a comment containing elements of sedition that sparked widespread concern.
Betong Police Chief, DSP Wan Mohamad Ali Wan Malek, confirmed that the arrest was made at around 10:30 pm last Monday (Dec. 15).
“A remand application was subsequently approved, allowing him to be detained for four days until December 20.
“Police have opened an investigation paper on December 4 after 25 police reports were lodged across Sarawak in connection with the comment made by the account owner,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 504 of the Penal Code.
Wan Mohamad said the offences involved content alleged to incite hatred, insult others, and sow disharmony among races and communities, while also posing potential risks to public order and security.
In light of this, he urged the public to exercise responsibility and restraint when using social media platforms, reminding users that online actions carry real-world consequences under the law.
Stern actions would be taken against any misuse of social media that could undermine national security and social harmony.
