KUCHING: A middle aged man, who was unable to cope with financial problems,
recently reached out to Hope Place here, requesting support for his family.
Halik Suhai, a 49-year-old former security guard, is jobless with three children and
suffers from multiple diseases.
“He was diagnosed with acute heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes and
hypertension.
“Furthermore, both of Halik’s legs are very swollen, mainly due to his kidney and
diabetes problem.
“Halik had undergone heart surgery in 2023 but had to stop working last year
because of his deteriorating state.
“Now, unable to move much, he needs assistance
and support whenever he wants to take a few steps,” Hope Place said in its
statement.
Hope Place added that Halik’s wife, Surati, 45, works as a daily paid cleaner to
support the family.
“His two younger children are still schooling, and his eldest son, Muizz, 18, who
just finished Form Five, is currently working in a coffeeshop, helping out with the burdening finances.
“However, when asked, Muizz wishes to further his studies,”
Hope Place added.
When Hope Place came to visit Halik, they were surprised that Halik was alone at
his home.
Hope Place stated that his next door neighbours always keep an eye on him.
“With his wife and eldest son working and the two other kids at school, Halik has
no choice.
“Halik also told Hope Place that he has difficulty sleeping at night. He is unable to
sleep flat and thus, most time, he will sleep during the day, sitting down.
“With staggering medical bills to pay, the family is struggling financially. We are
supporting the family with continuous basic food aid to alleviate their burdens,”
Hope Place added.
