KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here sentenced a man to 12 months in prison for assaulting his mother last week, leaving her with multiple injuries and nearly causing her teeth to break.

Mohammad Fitri Abdullah, 27, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali to the charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same code.

The offence was committed at their family home in Batu Kawa at around 1.30am on Sept 17.

According to case facts, Fitri, who is the youngest of two siblings, suddenly went amok and punched his 66-year-old mother, causing swelling to her left hand, a split lip, and nearly breaking her teeth.

The victim managed to flee and contacted the police for help.

Investigations found that the man, who lived with his mother, was often temperamental, but his behaviour was usually ignored by the victim until the incident turned violent.

Aside from punching her, Fitri also pulled his mother’s hair as she tried to escape. She eventually managed to grab her phone beside the mattress, pushed her son towards the kitchen door, and run out the front door to call the police.

Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted the case, while Fitri was unrepresented by counsel.
