Man jailed 12 months for death threat to stepbrother

KUCHING: A 36-year-old local man was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today (April 16) after pleading guilty to threatening to kill his stepbrother with a meat cleaver last year.

Mohd Hafizzullah Safri admitted to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.

The court heard that the offence occurred at about 4:11 am on May 10, 2025, at a house in Kampung Samariang Bentara.

The accused was said to have threatened to kill his 22-year-old stepbrother using a meat cleaver after a dispute at home.

Facts of the case revealed that the complainant had intervened in an argument between the accused and his younger sister after hearing commotion from a room.

However, the accused, unhappy after being reprimanded, allegedly attempted to attack the complainant with a meat cleaver, which was successfully evaded.

He then allegedly issued a death threat, stating in Malay: “Aku sik puas hati dengan Arash, aku mauk nya mati malam tuk di depan rumah” (I am not satisfied with Arash, I want him dead tonight in front of the house).

A police report was lodged following the incident, leading to the accused’s arrest at about 9:00 pm on the same day.

The court was also told that the accused was believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani, prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.
